Everything about Rudolph Valentino, from his body to the characters he played, was exotic. His career may have been abbreviated by his premature death at the age of 31, but Valentino popularized the (somewhat racist) stereotype of the "Latin lover" in Hollywood, and even his name was markedly more out of the ordinary than those of other actors. In an era dominated by hyper-masculine actors like Douglas Fairbanks, or comedians such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Valentino had a more ethnic and mysterious appeal, and he was lusted after by women to a degree that remains unsurpassed in the industry. The extent to which he captivated America can be seen in the response to his death; after passing away from a perforated ulcer in 1926, Ashton Trice and Samuel Holland note that his funeral "was one of the pop culture events of the century", and devastated women are alleged to have committed suicide out of heartbreak.
If Valentino's public persona was exotic, his personal life and background were no less fantastic, to the extent that it rivaled the improbable narratives of his movies. While he was identified as a Latin American in his films, Rudolph was actually born in Italy, the descendant of French and Italian heritage. The circuitous path that saw him reach the United States, and subsequently the film industry, is replete with outrageous good fortune. Even at an early age, Valentino was a dreamer, but there was no way that he could have anticipated the level of success he would achieve not long after landing in Ellis Island in the winter of 1913.

Whew! What a mouthful for a complete name. The man lead an interesting (if short) life as well as that of his family whose mother was forced to eat rats at one time so as to avoid starvation (yuck!) Called a poser and made sport of at times (sometimes other men who wore their hair in a similar fashion being referred to as "Vaselinos") yet able to rise above it and come across as a man of great distinction in the end. I loved this quote of his "I am merely the canvas on which women paint their dreams." I most always find these short biographies of people from Charles River Editors to be both informative and interesting and this one was no different. Very good book!Product details

Legends of Hollywood The Life of Rudolph Valentino (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Doron Alon Books Reviews
It was OK....not much said about did he have a heavy accent, and would he have made it in "talkies" had he lived. It was a short book.
a thin pamphlet with a big typo Richard Burton on second page of Introduction. Guess this author/publisher stamps out celebrity pamphlets. 40 pages for $6.99. Reproduced from typed pages, not set in font. Rough paper soaked up photo ink. so photos look odd. Oh well.
The man was more interesting than the myths I always heard about him.
This is a very good book.It covers his life a lot better than other books about his life.Anyone who loves to read about early Hollywood and it's stars will like it.
Terrible. It was a fast one hour read, not worth the money. Tells nothing new and leaves so much out. It reads like a Wickipedia entry which probably has more information than this book does.
Be careful what you wish for...
Valentino was probably one of the most misunderstood people around at that time.
Born in Italy he come here as a young man, and like a lot of immigrants in those days
held a variety of jobs, eventually teaching dancing which led him to wealthier people
therefore better connections.
All of his movies starting in 1921 were silent, he was known as The Latin Lover. Due to
his Mediterranean complexion he was not to well liked in Hollywood or by other men.
I am writing a book here, not my intention but this man lived a short but interesting life,
died at age 31..
A good subject and well written Charles Rivers Editors.
